Minions in Our Body ?

We've already known about Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats as chemical components in foods. Nonetheless, three of them aren't enough to satisfy our body needs. Our body need MORE chemical nutrient components from foods that only exist in small quantities. Although only needed in small quantities doesn't mean they're useless, yet they're important as our body does its metabolic system. They are Vitamins and Minerals.

Christian Nordqvist (2016) defines vitamins as organic compounds which are needed in small quantities to sustain life. Our body needs vitamins because it doesn't produce enough of them or even none at all.

Elle Paula (2015) defines minerals as essential substances that our body can't produce so we need to get them from foods. Like vitamins, our body only need small quantities of minerals so are classified as micronutrients. Minerals work with other nutrients so that our body does its functions properly.

Vitamins are then classified into 2 big groups, fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are vitamin A, D, E, and K. Water-soluble vitamins are vitamin B and C. Several vitamins are divided into more kinds of them. Vitamin D are consist of vitamin D2 (Ergocalchiferol) and vitamin D3 (Cholecalchiferol). And as for Vitamin B are consist of vitamin B1 (Thiamine), vitamin B2 (Riboflavine), vitamin B3 (Niacin), vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine), vitamin B7 (Biotin or vitamin H), vitamin B9 (Folic Acid), and vitamin B12 (Cobalamin).

Similar to vitamins, minerals are classified into Macrominerals and Trace Minerals. Macrominerals are minerals we need in a larger intake, such as Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorus, and Magnesium. Trace Minerals are minerals we need only in a very small amount for intake, such as Iron, Iodine.
